I started my meditation practice over 16 years ago.
I had thought about meditating for a long time before it actually became a practice. Some quiet part of me knew it would help me. So I would sit down, close my eyes,
and try to think about nothing.
IT. DID. NOT. WORK.
Not only would my mind refuse to quiet down, it seemed to get louder.
And to make things worse, I suddenly became very aware of how tired I was.
Back then, I got through challenges by pushing through them. I didn’t pause long enough to notice
the racing thoughts or the deep physical exhaustion.
But when I tried to meditate, there it all was.
Thousands of thoughts rushing through my mind.
A body that felt completely spent.
It felt unbearable.
So I would open my eyes, sad and
frustrated, and decide that meditation simply wasn’t for me.
And yet, the longing didn’t leave.
Years later, when I left my job as a teacher in 2009 and stepped into a whole new chapter of my career, I tried again.
This time, I didn’t pressure myself to have a “blank mind.”
Instead, I
trusted that God, Source, wanted to communicate with me, and that meditation might be a way for that connection to unfold.
So I showed up to my cushion with an open heart and a willingness to listen.
I didn’t know it then, but that was the beginning of my training in how to listen to my Soul. And eventually, how to help others do the same.
Two teachings emerged almost immediately.
Meditation is a way to receive from your Soul.
Meditation is not an escape. It’s an arrival.
Those two truths became my north star.
Whenever I worried that I was doing it wrong, I reminded myself that I was there to
receive.
And whenever life felt overwhelming and I wanted to use meditation as a way out, I noticed what that implied. That my life was something to escape from.
Instead, I set the intention to arrive. To come home to myself, exactly as I was.
Little by little, this became the quietly powerful meditation practice I have
today.
Receiving and coming back home to yourself are now two of my core teachings for helpers.
Meditating regularly is how you learn to dwell more deeply in your Soul.
How you increase your capacity to create more impact with less effort.
How you fill yourself up so that your cup
truly overfloweth.
And from that place, you can lead, serve, and create from abundance rather than depletion.
If this resonates, and you want to learn more, I’d love to invite you to the free meditation session I’m leading today, Monday, January 19.
All levels are welcome. The details are below.
With love,
Lisa
